WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Department of Defense on Friday applauded Denmark's decision to deploy troops in Syria, in assistance to the U.S. military presence there.
"The United States welcomes the announcement by the Danish Government to make a military deployment to Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and to continue to share the burden and responsibilities of this important mission," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said.
"Our Danish partners will work with the residual U.S. military force in northeast Syria to support stability and security," he said.
The decision came after Danish media reported in July that the kingdom had received a request from the United States to send troops to Syria.
Relationship between the two countries was dampened recently by a U.S. proposal to purchase the Danish territory of Greenland, which Copenhagen forcefully rejected. U.S. President Donald Trump cancelled a planned trip to Denmark amid the fallout.
