RAMALLAH, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Monday 50-million-U.S.-dollar contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The UNRWA said in an e-mailed statement that "the UAE is a valued and reliable partner to the agency."
UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl said that the show of support from the UAE came "at a time of intense pressure on our agency."
"The immense generosity of the UAE sends a clear message that Palestine refugees are not alone," Krahenbuhl added.
The financial support will help UNRWA maintain its programs for 2019 as planned, including areas of primary healthcare, education and social services, according to UNRWA.
UNRWA is mandated to provide life-saving services to some 5.4 million Palestinian refugees registered with the agency across its five fields of operation in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank.
Its services include education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement as well as protection and micro-finance.
