ZAGREB, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Construction of the biggest infrastructure project in Croatia, the Peljesac Bridge, has opened a new chapter in Croatia-China ties, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said here on Thursday.
The Croatian president met representatives of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), with whom she talked about the Peljesac Bridge construction and possible cooperation in transportation projects in the country.
According to a press release from her office, the president stressed that she is happy that the construction of the bridge, which is being built by a Chinese consortium led by CRBC, is going faster than planned.
"It's a project of great importance for Croatia, but for the People's Republic of China, too, as it is their first such project in the European Union," Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said. "There is a potential for even better and versatile cooperation between the two countries," the president noted.
She informed the Chinese delegation of railway and port development projects in the country, such as the Zagreb Pier Deep Sea Container Terminal, as well as the plans for the construction of a new port on the island of Krk.
The president said that Chinese companies could be interested in cooperation on the construction of the Rijeka-Botovo railway.
She also saidCroatia recognizes the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative, stressing that the presence of Chinese Premier at the 8th Summit of China and Central and Eastern European Countries next month is important for the southeastern European country.
