BUDAPEST, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Hungarian government has asked for the support to the production of kiwi and fig from the European Union, although both fruits are usually imported from tropical countries to Hungary, according to official sources here on Sunday.
"Hungary initiated the extension of production support for the production of kiwi and figs at the European Commission (EC)," the Ministry of Agriculture announced on its official site.
"Having assessed one of the largest kiwi plantations of the country, the ministry sees a real opportunity in kiwi and fig farming in Hungary, and initiated the expansion of production-linked hectare support at the EC," according to the ministry said.
"In addition, the development of the professional conditions for planting these fruit types has also begun to allow the possibility for the support of plantation as well," the statement added.
Under the plans, Hungarian farmers would be able to claim kiwi and fig production support as soon as 2019, according to the plans, according to the ministry.
