BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- One of China's most celebrated modern operas will be staged at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) starting Monday until Saturday.

First put on in 1958, songs from the opera, "Red Guards on Honghu Lake," have been played for generations in China. It has become part of the collective memory of the Chinese people.

In 2012, the NCPA cooperated with Hubei Opera and Dance Drama Theater, the copyright owner, to create a new version.

The NCPA edition has made innovative additions while maintaining classical elements, presenting vivid characters and breathtaking songs.

"Red Guards on Honghu Lake" originated from real events in the 1930s. In the Honghu Lake area of central China's Hubei Province, red guards led by Han Ying bravely struggled against tyrants in pursuit of a happy life.
