RAMALLAH, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Palestinian official said on Wednesday that the road to peace requires the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The remarks by Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman of the Palestinian Presidency, came in response to the earlier two-state solution statement by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"It is not the Palestinian position only, but also the Arab and international positions," Rudeineh said.
"There is a need to resolve all final-status issues in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy," he noted, referring to the UN Security Council Resolution 1515 and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.
Following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York on Wednesday, Trump told reporters that his administration intends to present a new peace plan for the Middle East within two to four months.
The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu was held on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly meeting, where Trump said he is 100 percent certain that the Palestinians will return to the negotiation table.
According to Israeli media, Trump expressed his support for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, describing it as "the best option.
The Palestinians has been boycotting the United States since Dec. 6, 2018 when Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, especially after May 14, the day the U.S. embassy to Israel was moved to the disputed holy city.
The last round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, sponsored by the United States, collapsed in April 2014, after nine months of futile efforts.
