UN chief appoints Swede as UNICEF deputy chief

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Friday the appointment of Charlotte Petri Gornitzka of Sweden as assistant secretary-general to serve as the deputy executive director, partnerships, for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Petri Gornitzka, who recently served as the chair of the Development Assistant Committee at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), brings to the position 20 years of experience in international development.

She has successfully built innovative partnerships with leaders from the civil society, national governments, and the private sector to deliver program results and influence critical policy changes.

Prior to joining the OECD, she served as the director-general of Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (2010-2016), where she established a network of Swedish and Sweden-based companies to promote sustainable global development.

She has previously served as secretary-general for the International Save the Children Alliance (2008-2010) and Save the Children Sweden (2003-2008), following seven years as under-secretary-general and director of communication for the Swedish Red Cross (1998-2003).

Petri Gornitzka, who has a background in management consulting with a focus on change management and communication, holds a master's degree from Stockholm University College of Music Education.

Born in 1959, she and her partner form a big family with two and six children, respectively.
