JERUSALEM, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Israeli security guard shot dead a Palestinian after the latter stabbed and lightly wounded another guard at the entrance to a settlement in the West Bank on Wednesday morning, Israeli officials said.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, arrived with his car at the gate of the settlement of Karmei Zur, north of Hebron.

The knife-wielding man stabbed a guard in his hand before the other guard shot and killed him, according to the spokesperson.

The guard was taken to a hospital with light stabbing wounds.

The incident was the latest in a wave of violence sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The tensions that ensued claimed the lives of at least 14 Palestinians and two Israelis.

Israel seized East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed East Jerusalem shortly later, claiming it part of its capital, in a move never recognized internationally, and kept its control over the West Bank and Gaza, despite international criticism.
