4 die in hotel fire in Prague

PRAGUE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Four people died in the fire of the Eurostars David hotel on Saturday in Prague's Naplavni Street, Michal Schneider, spokesman of the General Teaching Hospital in Prague, said Sunday.

The cause of the fire, one of the worst tragic accidents in the modern history of the Czech Republic, is still unclear, Prague police spokesman Jan Danek said, adding detectives and experts from the Institute of Crime and forensic experts are trying to determine the cause.

Of the four victims, two young foreigners, a 21-year-old German man and a 20-year-old Korean woman, died instantly on the scene and two women succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital, he said.

Danek said the identities of the two women who died in the hospital are not known yet. Among the injured people, there are three Dutch, a Turk and a French, two of the injured remain in serious condition. Doctors have released from hospital some slightly injured people, including two professional firefighters.

The hotel accommodated more than 100 guests. Firefighters evacuated 34 people, mostly foreigners, at the time of the fire.
